Than Singh Bhoj is my friend, next-door neighbour and landlord. He built the house in Ayarpani that I live in and have leased for the next 70 years. I often marvel at his ingenuity in designing and erecting such a complicated building, resting as the house does on four terraces. Than Singh is an old rascal and an old soldier and is fond of displaying the scars that he carries to prove it. He has fought in three wars but now prefers to spend his days sitting in front of his tiny general store, telling tall tales and handing out wisdom-of a sort-to anyone who will listen. Having successfully married off all his children and built himself a new house with the money I paid him, he has retired from all active duty whilst still somehow maintaining his role as head of the Bhoj family. He is definitely one of the coolest and snappiest dressers that I know. Here he sits in my chaishop, smoking a chillum, modeling a pair of Rayban sunglasses.
