Beggars are found in most parts of India. Some are obviously mad, many are ill and some are unpleasantly pushy or obsequious. There are a lot of children, embarking early on their chosen career. One learns to ignore the most obviously professional beggers after awhile, while I make a point of giving money to those with leprosy and elephantisis. In 2003, it is shameful to me that people should still suffer from these ghastly illnesses while cures exist. But this begger was like none of the above. He was jolly and smiling-and carried a bowl marked MIT. The mind boggles at the implications....
