When Than Singh's grandson was born, he asked me if the christening of the new-born child could be held at my house. Kala, his lovely daughter, came over one day and painted my stone courtyard with terracotta paint. Then, using whitewash, she daubed and dribbled symbols all over the stones. Rani, the child's mother, sat in the middle of these striking designs holding the baby while the local pandit blessed the child and named him Ravindra or Ravi as he is known.
